About Us

Conception &
Early Years

In 2016, the youth committee at the Islamic Center of Detroit led by Yusra Muflahi realized the need to bring mental health awareness to the Muslim-American & Arab-American diaspora in the greater Detroit community. MY Mental Wellness was founded with the goal of hosting programs, trainings, and workshops on a variety of topics such as substance abuse, addiction, anger management, and pre-marriage counseling.

The Clinic’s Establishment

As the demand for therapy services outgrew programing needs of the community, the Islamic Center of Detroit hired its first therapist in the September 2021.

By February of 2024, MY Mental Wellness became the first-ever fully staffed community mental health clinic to be established inside a masjid (mosque) in North America.

2024-Present

The clinical operations at MY Mental Wellness continue to expand services at the Islamic Center of Detroit, while also expanding to a virtual student-run clinic at the University of Michigan and school-based counseling at the International Islamic Academy in Detroit.

The clinic is now a teaching site with student interns learning from our experienced clinicians and learning how to provide culturally sensitive and spiritually guided care.
